Hi Ying,

If you automatically want to check the health of your squid server, then you will also need to setup some sort of mailer to alert you if your health script fails to connect to Squid on port 3128.

Well you can use the Nagios Network management tool to perform basic health checks such as ping, telnet on port 3128, etc.

It has very nice and cool plugins which will alert you in case your squid boxes are failing.
