Squid 1.0b9 and linux

I haven't yet tried beta 9 and I'm wondering whether to...

I get the impression that ftpget communication changes (to a unix
socket) have broken squid badly on Linux. Is this the case, or have
people got it going properly - once that the off-by-one bug mentioned
on the list is fixed.
