I recommend using the 'phk' malloc, that comes with FreeBSD.
(See my previous posts on this, to squid-users).
With a couple of simple modifications, it will build on any OS that
correctly works with mmap(). I *think* I posted patches to the list.

Works fine for me under both FreeBSD (obviously) and Irix 6.2.
